Root canal treatment is the jewel in the crown. How to manage the restoration of the root canal treated tooth

Root canal treatment is not complete without the coronal restoration. It is during the treatment planning phase that the restoration required following root treatment is first considered as part of the root canal treatment. The coronal restoration after root canal treatment provides a number of potential variables such as when does a tooth need a post inserted into the root and when should cusps be covered? Is a cast coronal restoration always required and if so what type?

On completion of the lecture participants will be able to discuss :

1. the importance of the coronal restoration after root canal treatment to preserve the root canal filling by preventing coronal leakage.

2. the value of the coronal restoration after root canal treatment to protect and reinforce the remaining tooth after root canal treatment.

3. what are the coronal restorative treatment options following root canal treatment.

Peri-implantitis - can it be successfully treated?

Peri-implantitis is a pathological condition occurring in tissues around dental implants, characterised by inflammation in the peri-implant mucosa and progressive loss of supporting bone. Clinically there are increased probing depths and bleeding on with crater like bony defects around the implants. Peri-implantitis is an ever increasing issue, occurring in over 15% of patients and 6% of implants. Successfully managing peri-implantitis is often more difficult to manage than treating periodontitis due the difference in the anatomical structures around implants compared to teeth. This lecture will describe the aetiology and diagnosis of peri-implantitis as well as give examples of different treatment modalities.

LEARNING LAB: Cutting edge zirconia - the stronger, more durable, less abrasive option for your patients

Everything you need to know about the strongest, most translucent zirconia material in the world today.

The main reason our dentists use zirconia is for its strength. It’s a really strong all-ceramic material. The second advantage is its really low-wear properties. There’s a common misconception that because zirconia is really strong, it will wear down other teeth. But that’s completely wrong. Zirconia’s strength means the wear is actually a lot lower than a lot of the other ceramics.

Traditional ceramic crowns are only layered on the surface, which leaves them vulnerable to unsightly chipping. Find out how Avant has partnered with Aidite to solve that problem with a gradient layering manufacturing process for chip-proof construction.

Assessing restorability - build it up or take it out?

On a daily basis, dentists make assessments on whether it is worthwhile to restore or extract teeth. Some of these decisions are straightforward, some less so. This presentation will use a variety of cases to illustrate different tooth-related and patient-related considerations when making the decision to restore or extract the tooth of interest.

LEARNING LAB: The latest injection moulding techniques for fast chair side restorations

Have you tried injection moulding in the past? It could be time to revisit the technique. Innovative new materials have solved many of the traditional problems, and dentists are now achieving ceramic-like results with faster, simpler, less invasive and more affordable composite injectables for aesthetic restorations.

Injection moulding is a popular alternative to indirect restorations like ceramic veneers. It’s less invasive for the patient and injectable composites are fully repairable chairside.

We’ll discuss:

- Innovative new materials
- Common treatment applications
- The importance of smile design and pre-treatment planning
- How to prepare teeth for injection moulding treatments
- The injection moulding technique and removing excess
- How to polish composite restorations to a ceramic-like finish

New beginnings: management of the inflamed vital pulp

Vital pulp therapy for the management of reversible and irreversible pulpitis has evolved from largely empirical origins. Scientific advances in dental pulp biology, tissue regeneration and materials science has heralded a new treatment paradigm in pulp preservation techniques. Vital pulp therapy may provide clinicians with an alternative to pulpectomy, endodontic treatment or extraction. Contemporary evidence based techniques in the management of deep carious lesions and pulp exposures will be presented.

The adhesive blueprint - for indirect restorations

The restoration types we have today differ greatly than what we had 20 years ago. Indirect restorations such as Crownlay, veneerlay and tabletops are only possible due to our increasing confidence in bonding. It is clear that we can bond onto tooth substrate without utilising any retentive and resistive form. Hence, we are conserving more tooth structure than ever before.

We will analyse the latest adhesive bonding strategies, debunk a few myths and describe the differences between the current adhesive systems available today: etch-and-rinse, self-etching and universal and the difference in resin bonding strategies - self-adhesive and adhesive.

This presentation aims at providing a set of guidelines for use to maximise clinical outcomes and to avoid post-operative sensitivity through a summary of current evidence and through a series of clinical cases.

LEARNING LAB: Managing dental disease from a model based on conservation and healing

Geoff offers a medical-based model to managing dental disease focused on the conservation and healing of the damaged dental tissue as opposed to the high-tech amputation model that is currently practised by many dentists today. He provides evidence from referred literature and his own clinical experience to support this model as a viable and preferred pathway to practise dental care. He also provides a rational sequence of applying these techniques that enable dentists to achieve a predictable clinical outcome, in an environment where many poorly thought out, off the label protocols have emerged to confuse the practise of biometric dental care.
