Root canal treatment is the jewel in the crown. How to manage the restoration of the root canal treated tooth
Root canal treatment is not complete without the coronal restoration. It is during the treatment planning phase that the restoration required following root treatment is first considered as part of the root canal treatment. The coronal restoration after root canal treatment provides a number of potential variables such as when does a tooth need a post inserted into the root and when should cusps be covered? Is a cast coronal restoration always required and if so what type?

Phillippe Zimet is the immediate past Lead in Endodontics at the La Trobe University School of Dentistry and Oral Health. Phillippe is currently the Adjunct Professor in the Department of Rural Health at Latrobe University. Phillippe edited the Systematic Operating Procedures manual for infection control and occupational health and safety for the Australian Dental Association (Victorian Branch). Phillippe is a Fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Dental Surgeons, Academy of Dentistry International, International College of Dentists and Pierre Fauchard Academy. He has published, and lectured nationally and internationally in many aspects of endodontics.
He is a Past President of the Australian Society of Endodontology Inc as well as the Asian Pacific Endodontic Confederation. In 2004 he was awarded the ADA (VB) Inc Dentistry Achievement Award for services to the Dental Profession. In 2014 Phillippe was accepted as an Honorary Life Member of the Australian Society of Endodontology (VB). In 2016, he was inaugurated as a Foundation member International Association for Dental Traumatology. Past clinical appointments include Consultant Endodontist at Monash Medical Centre and Senior Fellow at the University of Melbourne.

Rebecca Bateson is an Acting Director in the Devices Emerging Technology and Diagnostics Section, currently serving as the project lead responsible for the introduction of the suite of reforms known as the personalised medical devices framework. Rebecca has a background in Law and a Master’s in Public Administration. She has been with the TGA for 12 years, where her work has included managing the Medical Devices Information Unit and the Devices Secretariat.
Rebecca is passionate about the development of strategic solutions and resources for both internal and external stakeholders to improve day-to-day business at the TGA. She has utilised her skills to draft legislative instruments, develop associated guidance to make regulatory requirements understandable and accessible for stakeholders, and worked with staff within the TGA to develop sound structures to streamline processes and improve service delivery. In 2016, Rebecca’s commitment to stakeholder engagement was recognised with the Department of Health’s Australia Day Award for Service.
Rebecca’s team includes staff with backgrounds in biomechanical engineering and allied health. Together the personalised medical devices team are working to contact over 10,000 individually impacted stakeholders to bring the regulatory requirements of the personalised medical devices framework to their attention and assist them with achieving compliance with their obligations. The team are also members of the International Medical Device Regulator’s Forum’s Personalized Medical Devices Working group, developing guidance that can be used to harmonise the requirements for personalised medical devices with jurisdictions around the world.

Peri-implantitis - can it be successfully treated?
Peri-implantitis is a pathological condition occurring in tissues around dental implants, characterised by inflammation in the peri-implant mucosa and progressive loss of supporting bone. Clinically there are increased probing depths and bleeding on with crater like bony defects around the implants. Peri-implantitis is an ever increasing issue, occurring in over 15% of patients and 6% of implants. Successfully managing peri-implantitis is often more difficult to manage than treating periodontitis due the difference in the anatomical structures around implants compared to teeth. This lecture will describe the aetiology and diagnosis of peri-implantitis as well as give examples of different treatment modalities.

Poor sleep quality can affect many parts of our general health. Pain, especially when chronic, can trigger poor sleep. Conversely, poor sleep can exacerbate the pain perception. The relationship between pain and sleep is complex. Hossam graduated from Ain Shams University (Cairo, Egypt) in 2006, and worked in both public and private sectors before relocating to Australia in 2010. Hossam obtained a Fellowship of the Royal Australasian College of Dental Surgeons in 2015, and graduated with a Doctorate of Clinical Dentistry in Prosthodontics from the University of Melbourne in 2018. His research project centered on the use of novel CAD-CAM materials in full arch implant dentistry, and was published in the International Journal of Oral and Maxillofacial Implants.
Hossam now works at private specialist practices in Moonee Ponds and Melbourne CBD. He enjoys ongoing involvement within the academic field as a lecturer and clinical supervisor at the University of Melbourne’s dental school, where he is also the coordinator of the implant component for DDS students and the academic lead of CPD. In collaboration with Melbourne University and the International Team for Implantology (ITI), Hossam delivers CPD programs that educate general dental practitioners on Prosthodontic topics.

The restoration types we have today differ greatly than what we had 20 years ago. Indirect restorations such as Crownlay, veneerlay and tabletops are only possible due to our increasing confidence in bonding. It is clear that we can bond onto tooth substrate without utilising any retentive and resistive form. Hence, we are conserving more tooth structure than ever before.

Haylea completed her undergraduate dental degree at Latrobe University in 2014 and worked as a general dentist for three years in the outer suburbs of Melbourne. She completed her primary exams in 2016 and was accepted into The University of Queensland to specialise as an orthodontist in 2018. Haylea has obtained her Membership in Primary Dental Science and Specialist Dental Practice in Orthodontics through the Royal Australasian College of Dental Surgeons. Hossam graduated from Ain Shams University (Cairo, Egypt) in 2006, and worked in both public and private sectors before relocating to Australia in 2010. Hossam obtained a Fellowship of the Royal Australasian College of Dental Surgeons in 2015, and graduated with a Doctorate of Clinical Dentistry in Prosthodontics from the University of Melbourne in 2018. His research project centered on the use of novel CAD-CAM materials in full arch implant dentistry, and was published in the International Journal of Oral and Maxillofacial Implants.
Hossam now works at private specialist practices in Moonee Ponds and Melbourne CBD. He enjoys ongoing involvement within the academic field as a lecturer and clinical supervisor at the University of Melbourne’s dental school, where he is also the coordinator of the implant component for DDS students and the academic lead of CPD.
